Tackling
Tables A refreshingly Australian angle on learning and understanding multiplication tables. This book provides one of the most comprehensive explanations on how to ‘teach’ tables. Why do some children struggle? You will find the answer in this book. Various methods are reviewed and common elements are drawn together to provide a framework for teaching. Suggestions for assessing children’s table knowledge are given along with ways of building up a bank of ‘known’ multiplication and division facts. Games to improve ‘fluency’ with the facts are provided. |
Structure of the Book The ability to fluently recall the basic multiplication facts, or tables as they are widely known, is an important facet of mathematics. Drill and practice activities are often used to develop recall of these facts. The purpose of this publication is to provide teachers with some alternatives to the standard drill and practice activities used in many classrooms. This book is divided into several parts. Section 1: Preparing to learn the basic facts. This section includes:
The second section includes:
Many of the activities are designed to be used several times. To this end, blank copies of various pages have been provided so that teachers can rework and reuse the activities. Students may even use reproducible sheets to create new activities for other children in the class to complete. A small photocopy symbol appears on the top of each reproducible page. The third section contains activities designed to build a bank of known facts in non-threatening situations. The final section examines ways to increase the speed of response with basic multiplication facts. Activities are provided to assist students in developing fluency with basic number facts. |
